Teachers love it because it’s sensible and schools love it because it’s systematic.
As a classroom teacher, I felt very underprepared by my formal university qualifications to teach spelling. I was thoroughly confused about blends, graphemes and don’t get me started on all the spelling rules!!!
Well now I know better!
I developed a sensible way to teach spelling. It’s called ‘The SMART Spelling Approach’. Teachers love it because it makes sense and is ‘doable’ in a classroom. Schools love it because it’s systematic. SMART Spelling is a structured, multi sensory approach that caters for different levels of spelling ability in one class.
The SMART Spelling manual clearly outlines a Prep – 6 scope and sequence for teaching spelling. It gives teachers a way to explicitly teach: sound – letter links (The Alphabetic Principle), syllables, the 44 different sounds and their most common spelling patterns.
